Monday 11th September 2017

1)  Dance Mandala with Alizeh Valjee! (Karachi)

Dance Mandala is a method of moving meditation that encourages authentic self-expression, cultivating bliss, and stillness. Through free-form movement, music, and gentle guided instruction, the participants are exposed to motion to confront the rigidity and tension of their own bodies.

2) Hello Tomorrow Pakistan Challenge by Pakistan Innovation Foundation – PIF (Islamabad)

Hello Tomorrow Pakistan, in collaboration with Pakistan Innovation Foundation, is organising a local challenge, to identify Pakistani tech entrepreneurs using science and technology to solve real-world problems. The Jury Members at the Local Challenge event will select the top THREE Winners. These winners will be sponsored by the French Embassy to attend The Hello Tomorrow Global Summit in Paris in October.

3) Influencer Marketing Speaker: Mr Fahad Tiwana, CEO Tech Valley by NUST (Islamabad)

Technology Incubation Center –  are hosting an Expert Talk Session on Influencer Marketing by Mr Fahad Tiwana, for in-house incubated start-up companies. Learn and be inspired by real life mentors and take the particle steps needed to make your dreams a reality.

Fahad Tiwana, CEO TechValley, runs many different tech companies, as well as a software consultancy firm, a non-profit organization (Tiwana Foundation), and a number of blogging websites. 4)  Traditional Miniature Painting & Calligraphy Exhibition (Lahore)

Zahoor Ul Akhlaq Gallery at The National College of Arts, has a new exhibition on the books which always gets us excited! Titled ‘Traditional Miniature painting and Calligraphy’ – Rabia Asharaf’s work has been a means to ignite her spiritual quest of negating the self and then rediscovering it. We are quite looking forward to checking this out.

5) Watch ‘Heer Ranjha’ a contemporary musical rendition at Alhamra (Lahore)

Directed by Zain Ahmed

The tragic love story from 1766 of Heer Ranjha. Heer (Sanam Saeed ) and Ranjha (Hasan Raza) meet at a wedding and immediately fell in love. Ranjha stays on in Heer’s village disguised as a cow herder. Love blossoms but tragedy strikes in the form of an evil uncle Qaido who discovers their love and sets about destroying all chances of their happiness.

6) Earth & Sky – KAS Astrophotography Exhibition at T2F by Karachi Astronomers Society (Karachi)

The Karachi Astronomers Society in collaboration with The Second Floor (T2F) is launching an astrophotography exhibition, a cool combination of works that should appeal to your inner nerd and outer art buff!

7) Esharêh Live Concert – Pakistan Tour –  by Alliance française de Karachi

Esharêh in Farsi means “illusion”.  The Ensemble Esharêh has a pretty cool sound, that crosses cultures, traditions and time. Combining Indian, Arab and Persian percussions, Esharêh charm you into a world of sound the feels familiar with its fusion of many traditions.

8) Ugly Pretty – Taseer Art Gallery (Lahore)

This exhibition is the first of the season at Taseer Art Gallery and is curated by Aziz Sohail. UglyPretty brings together five painting practices, Abdullah Qureshi, Amna Rahman, Inaam Zafar, Irfan Hasan and Sara Khan in dialogue with each other.

Bringing together diverse techniques – whether oil on canvas, water-colour or miniature, the artists approach the subject from various viewpoints– such as non-heteronormative or diasporic, especially blurring the lines between masculine and feminine. The resultant work is a negotiation between fixed and binary notions of prettiness and ugliness.

9) Struggles and Dreams: Three Feminist Poets (Lahore)

The Saida Waheed Gender Initiative and the Gurmani Center of Languages and Literature are hosting three important Sindhi feminist writers – The conversation will revolve around their personal and political histories – highlighting their intersections between political activism, feminist thought, and creative work.

TANVEER ANJUM is a prominent Urdu poet and translator. She started writing poetry, mostly prose poems, in the 1970s and has published seven collections so far.  A bilingual (English and Urdu) collection of her selected poems, titled Fireworks on a Windowpane, was published in 2014.

ATTIYA DAWOOD is a celebrated Sindhi poet, writer, and activist, who has been hailed as ‘the most important feminist writer in Sindhi’ by Shaikh Ayaz. She has published seven books, the latest being Ek Thaka Hua Sach (2016) which was published in Hindi in Mumbai, India.

AMAR SINDHU is a prominent columnist, activist, and Sindhi language, poet. Sindhu is also a professor of Philosophy and chairperson of the Department of Philosophy at Sindh University, Jamshoro. In 2013, her collection of poetry was published, titled ‘Ojagiyan Ankhein ja Sapna’ (Jagtee Ankhoo Ke Sapnay). 

10) Munaqqash’ Opening Day by Mehreen Hashmi, Curator/Visual Artist/Educator and IamKarachi

Munaqqash is an ongoing public art project, with live art activations and installations that take place in an abandoned canteen at the National Museum in Karachi.

Mehreen Hashmi is the implementing partner and curator of this venture. Whats interesting is that this project is a continuation of the Heidelberg project initiated in 1986 by artist Tyree Guyton and named after Heidelberg Street where the installation started. The inspiration taken is intended to connect and promote this project globally. 


Friday 15th September 201711) Exhibition – The Onrushing 1 by Gallery 6 Islamabad

Gallery 6 is launching their first show from a series of group exhibitions by APA 2017 artists; Abdul Aziz Meer, Ahsan Javaid, Kanwal Zafar & Faheem Tufail.  Titled “The Onrushing 1”.

12) DAP and TLW Present: Bachelor Girls -Screening and Discussion by Documentary Association of Pakistan and The Last Word

The Last Word, in collaboration with the Documentary Association of Pakistan, presents Bachelor Girls. Hailed as a powerful and brilliant look into the lives of independent women looking to live by themselves, the documentary follows a group of women from small towns and big cities recounting their stories of rejection and exclusion.

After the screening, the director Shikha Makan will be in conversation with Marya Javed about the making of the documentary. She will be joined by Nabiha Meher Sheikh and Zainab Chugtai who will talk about their own experiences of living alone.
