Walking into the Paint Bucket Gallery is always a treat. Located in a house surrounded by lush gardens and old trees, it is one of those old cultured Lahori homes with an abundance of art splattered across the walls. In the back garden, the muted grey walls exhibited the work everyone had come to see; a two-person show titled Mindscapes, featuring the recent body of work by Anushka Rustomji and Faraz Amer Khan.

Curated by Anum Lasharie, the show was on display for the evening of the 14th of this month. An exploration of form and colour, both talented artists have taken a leap into the world of abstraction. While Khan explores the viewed horizon in his work, a sight that is both factual and actual at the same place, Rustomji delves into foreign and desolate landscapes which appear suspended between our reality and imagination. In all fifteen pieces, a variety and mixture of mediums have been used including gouache, acrylic, ink, watercolour as well as oil on canvas.

Born in Karachi, now Lahore based Rustomji graduated with a BFA in Painting from the National College of Arts. She has titled her series displayed at The Paint Bucket as Celeste; an Italian word which translates in English to ‘sky blue’ and refers to divine beings and heavenly settings. It is an apt name for her display of artworks which takes my mind along the lines of a pristine blue sky. It resonates with infinite space, unmeasurable depths and untouched boundaries. A close observation towards nature, combined with deeply ingrained memories, have shaped her paintings into resembling some form of illusionary landscapes, enhanced by factors like colour and light. The layering technique and transparency in her work could evoke contemporary concerns of identity, boundaries, and feelings of doubt and uncertainty.

Faraz Amer Khan, also a Karachi born and Lahore based visual artist, graduated in 2016 from the National College with a major in Miniature Art. His ability to constantly explore diverse mediums and processes have led him to Fragments, the title he gave to this collection of work. Although the reflective nature of our shared existence plays a key role in Khan’s work, each piece has the ability to easily be moulded and lend itself to the viewers own interpretation. Layer by layer, his work builds an imagined yet tangible reality through the use of vivid colour and offers to rearrange, yet confirm a reflection of our shared and individual existence.
